In this round of Mysterious Slovakia, we travel to Košice, home to the Saint Elizabeth‘s Cathedral— the largest church in Slovakia and the easternmost Gothic cathedral in Europe. Beyond its treasures and relics, the cathedral hides a dramatic story: the legend and legacy of the Urban Bell.
Born in the aftermath of the devastating fire of 1556, the bell once rang out from the Urban Tower for more than three centuries, marking holidays, warning of danger, and celebrating the life of the city. According to legend, it carried within it the spirit of Urban, a bell ringer who gave his life to save Košice. But in 1966, fire struck again, and the mighty bell was shattered into fragments.
Today, a reconstructed original and a faithful replica preserve its memory. Join us as we uncover the mysteries, legends, and rebirth of Košice’s Urban Bell. This episode was prepared by our colleague Ladislava Hudzovičová.
