This September, we continue our journey through Mysterious Slovakia with Part 8, exploring the Tribeč Mountain range. Known for its dense forests and eerie legends of mysterious disappearances, Tribeč is also rich in history and archaeological significance. From ancient fortified settlements to modern discoveries using LIDAR technology, the mountains have seen millennia of human activity.
Archaeologist Peter Bisták explains that, while the mountains appear heavily forested today, they were once extensively shaped by human hands, with evidence of past industries like charcoal and lime production. As for the spooky stories, one real sinkhole adds some geological truth, but the mysterious disappearances are more likely rooted in folklore than fact.
These legends inspired Slovak author Jozef Karika’s bestselling novel, which mixes reality and fiction in a gripping psychological thriller. The book was later adapted into a popular film by director Peter Bebjak, who found its blend of the real and the imagined fascinating. Despite the eerie atmosphere, both Karika and Bebjak agree—Tribeč is a stunning destination for hikers and nature lovers.
