A seventh vehicle will be added to Metropolitan Police fleet in the central Slovak town of Zvolen with batteries instead of a petrol tank. The electric vehicle, a Peugeot iOn, has been leased by the local government from the power supplier Stredoslovenská energetika. Along with the car, the town will have two charging stations installed, with one being accessible to the public.
“Our cars are in use almost continuously and are already well worn, so we welcome this opportunity,” said the deputy mayor Juraj Družbacký. “The metropolitan police already have one car that runs on compressed gas, with this being another vehicle which will save the city money. We will pay only for the electricity we use, which is a negligible amount compared to gasoline; about two euro per recharge,” he added. The new electric Peugeot has been designed with a top speed of 130 kilometres per hour and a maximum range of approximately 150 kilometres per charge, meaning the vehicle will be limited to short trips within the town. In a first for Slovakia, Zvolen’s Metropolitan Police are expecting to receive the battery-powered vehicle today. “This almost silent car will look after police patrols and interventions in the central urban area. It will be part of our contribution to the greening of the fleet,” said deputy mayor Juraj Družbacký. The electric vehicle is valued at €23,000, however the lease for the first year has been marked at a symbolic €1.20. This sum also includes a charging station worth €3000.
