Mochovce Nuclear Debate Reaches Meltdown

The Nuclear Regulatory Authority promptly reacted to the Supreme Court’s verdict related to the completion of the third and fourth units of the Nuclear Power Plant Mochovce (EMO). The regulator is already taking all necessary steps to abide by the court’s decision and to enable fluent continuation of the completion of the EMO units.

Chairwoman of the authority Marta Žiaková ruled out on Wednesday the deferral effect of the appeal filed by the organization Greenpeace and by doing so the Nuclear Regulatory Authority secured the continuation in the completion of the nuclear units. The Nuclear Supervisory Office repeatedly announced appeals proceedings on permitting a change of the construction before completion of the EMO that was revoked by the Supreme Court. The exclusion of the deferral effect is required by ‘urgent general interest,’ said the authority. “The interruption or halt of works on the construction would not only have an extraordinary harmful impact on the social situation in the adjacent region but also, given the type of work positions on the construction of a nuclear power plant on employment in some professions within the whole of Slovakia,” states the chairwoman of the authority in her decision.
