NATO, of which Slovakia has been a member for eleven years now, is viewed as an organisation of collective defence, but has long been subordinate to decisions made by the United States, which is pursuing specific geopolitical goals, mainly in terms of securing the dollar as the global reserve currency, the Slovak Soldiers Association wrote in a statement on Tuesday. According to it, European NATO members are unable to defend their interests due to different historical and cultural foundations from those of the USA. "The fully-fledged defence of European interests is based on compromises by the largest member countries, which must realise that the colonies that are under their administration - albeit not officially - and are not part of Europe's interests, as isn't interference in the sovereignty of other countries outside Europe. The European interest is the European people and their interests", stated the association, noting that EU-member countries together have more than 1.5 million soldiers on active service. "This figure is more than enough to protect the national interest of every [EU] country, while at the same time joint military units could be allocated in order to tackle the current threats on Europe's borders", reads the statement.
