150 km/h speed limit means some will drive at 180

The speed debate continues, after parliament looks into increasing the limits on highways. There are indeed some motorway stretches that would allow an increase in the speed limit from 130 km/h to 150 km/h, but it's too early to be more specific, Police Corps president Tibor Gaspar told TASR at a conference on the prevention of traffic accidents on Thursday. Police Corps Vice-president Ľubomír Abel conceded the option earlier this week, stating that the technical condition of vehicles is currently better and safer than previously. Gaspar believes that increasing the speed limit could make traffic faster in some sections without increasing the danger of accidents. Nevertheless, this issue is only at the level of expert debate at the moment. There are also certain risks, however. "If you allow 150 km/h, some drivers will automatically have the tendency to drive at 180," said Gaspar. The Czech Republic is also discussing a plan to raise the limit on certain stretches to 150 kilometres per hour. While a bill to this effect was backed by the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament on April 29, the actual introduction of the higher speed limit is being opposed by the Transport Ministry and Czech President Milos Zeman.
