Slovakia will support the reforms of EU proposed by Great Britain

According to the Foreign and European affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák, due the outcome of its General election Great Britain may create pressure on the reforms within the European Union and Slovakia shall support this initiative. Lajčák stated for RTVS, that the EU should come closer to its citizens and become more flexible with its competences:

"We have to get rid of the barriers that are still in the common market and digital market. Great Britain is very close to us, because they want a free market, which is also profitable for Slovakia."

The possibility of Great Britain leaving the EU that should be decided within the upcoming two years is a threat also to Slovak concerns. Head of the Slovak parliament's foreign committee František Šebej:

"This is the moment we should try to meet half-way with the British initiative of renegotiating their EU membership. Many of the things they propose are right and should apply to all members."

According to Šebej, the possible withdrawal of United Kingdom from the EU may endanger mutually benefiting contracts, for example the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership with USA and Canada.
