Non-Governmental Organisations to Receive €39.9 Million from Taxes

Non-governmental organisations in Slovakia gathered a total of €39.9 million resulting from the 2 percent share of income taxes able to be donated by individuals as well as companies with their tax returns, according to a report of the Finance Directorate of the Finance Ministry. The number, however, represented a year-on-year drop of more than €4 million. Slovaks can voluntarily assign 2 percent of their income tax from the previous year to a civic association or non-profit organisation of their choice. These have to be legally registered as such.

"The number of organisations has grown recently. Whereas taxpayers could choose among roughly 4,000 applicants seeking the 2-percent tax allotment in 2002, the number has swelled to 11,000 applicants last year," read the report of the Finance Directorate.  When it was introduced in 2002, about €3 million was the total sum assigned that year, but that peaked to €55 million in 2009. In 2012, the applicants received a total of approximately €44 million.
