Slovaks can express their support for oncological patients by buying daffodils on Friday. This is the 19th year of the so called Daffodil Day organised by the League against cancer. Volunteers in Slovak streets have been collecting contributions by handing over yellow flowers to each contributor. They then express their solidarity with oncological patients by wearing the badge. The goal of the national event is to inform the public about cancer and about the current situation of the ill in Slovakia in order not to threaten but rather connect people. Last year, the collected sum reached almost €907,000.
The founder and the current president of the League against cancer organisation Eva Siracká became one of 47 laureats of the European citizen's 2015 award. The jury appreciated her effort in the fight against cancer. Doctor Siracká has devoted her work not only to oncological patients but also to helping and supporting their families. For her it is important to educate the public on the problem of cancer. Her work includes running Daffodil Day with volunteering students raising money for oncology, setting up a free phone line or establishing assistance centres for these patients. The prize was handed over to her in Bratislava in January this year.
