The killing of leading Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov is a tragedy for the entire Russian society and a blow for Russia, which more than ever before needs the plurality of political opinions and not a return to the past, the Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry wrote in a statement issued on Saturday. "Opposition is a key part of a healthy democratic society. Boris Nemtsov dedicated his life to the building of a democratic and open Russia and its strong ties with neighbours and partners. In every single public office he was trying to reform and open up Russia [to the world], and to enable its citizens to enjoy a bigger share on the decision-making process on the direction of the country," stated the ministry, adding that it condemns his murder. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico also voiced on Saturday his condemnation of the murder. "I'm joining all those who're calling for a prompt and transparent investigation of this crime" adds Fico in his statement. Also Slovak Parliamentary Chairman Peter Pellegrini believes in prompt and transparent investigation of this despicable crime. "I believe that the murderers will be brought to justice," added Pellegrini on Saturday.
Boris Nemtsov, former deputy premier under erstwhile Russian President Boris Yeltsin and an outspoken critic of the policies of incumbent Russian President Vladimir Putin, was shot dead by an unidentified attacker in the centre of Moscow on Friday (27 February).
