Additional €130 million Needed for Jaslovské Bohunice V1 Decommissioning

To decommission two blocks of the V1 Nuclear Power Plant in Jaslovské Bohunice an additional €130 million will be required. This is the finding of the European Parliament Committee on Budgetary Control made during a working visit of its delegation to Jaslovské Bohunice. As Slovak MEP Vladimir Manka said, the shutdown of the reactors however is not endangered.

According to him these additional funds will be needed sometime after 2020 and it is Slovakia’s priority to have €200 million for the V1 decommissioning approved in the EU budget for 2014-2020. The head of the delegation of the European Parliament Committee for Budgetary Control Jens Geier stated that they are satisfied with the decommissioning of the two Bohunice units. The EU has so far contributed to the decommissioning in Jaslovské Bohunice by more than €464 million. The total costs of decommissioning of the V1 have been estimated at €1.1 billion. Slovakia shut down the first unit at V1 at the end of 2006 and the second unit at the end of 2008 under the Accession Treaties to the European Union. The two nuclear units should be definitely closed in 2025.
