The mortal remains of Slovak soldier Daniel Kavuliak, who was killed on Tuesday, July 9 at Kandahar airfield in Afghanistan when an Afghan soldier opened fire on NATO troops, were brought back to Slovakia on Wednesday evening. Shortly before 8 p.m., a plane carrying the soldier’s body landed in Bratislava where his coffin was handed over to the family during a brief mourning ceremony. The funeral service is due to take place today.
Two seriously wounded soldiers from the same shooting were flown by an American C-17 transport aircraft on Thursday to a U.S military base at Ramstein in Germany and have been transferred to a U.S military hospital at Landstuhl where they have already been examined by a specialist team of surgeons. One of the two soldiers has a serious head injury and is being maintained in an induced coma to prevent further damage. The U.S ambassador to Slovakia, Theodore Sedgwick said that on behalf of all Americans, he wished to express his deep and heartfelt condolences to the friends and family members of the soldiers who have been affected by this tragic event. He added that the United States is grateful to the Slovak Government, the Slovak Armed Forces and the Slovak people for their contributions to the Afghanistan security mission.
