A special parliamentary session on public debt needs to be held, stated on Wednesday Deputy Chairs of the opposition party SDKU Ivan Štefanec and Ľudovít Kaník, claiming that the ruling SMER party has refused several times to put on the agenda of the Parliament a debate about a letter sent by Finance Minister Peter Kažimír. In the letter addressed to the Speaker of Parliament, Kažimír explained the increased debt to above the lower 50 percent limit of the protective range and measures the Cabinet prepared to reduce the debt. The Constitutional Act on Budget Responsibility required him to such a public explanation.
In the letter Kažimír writes that an improvement of public administration balance and economic growth should stop the rise of Slovakia’s public debt. However, the opposition are not happy with this response and are calling for an in-depth debate. MPs representing the ruling SMER refused to discuss the letter of the Finance Minister - for the second time already as they dismissed an identical demand last week. The opposition considers the current attitude of the Finance Minister a mockery. Finance Minister, in his written explanation assumes that the state debt will culminate at 56 percent of GDP in 2015 and may drop slightly to 55.9 percent of GDP in 2016.
