Modra majolica gains EU geographical protection

Traditional Modra majolica pottery has been granted protected geographical indication status by the European Union. The traditional craft was officially registered in the EU's register of geographical indications for craft and industrial products on 16 October. The announcement was made by the town of Modra and Slovak Folk Majolica, the cooperative that applied for the registration.

The new designation protects the name Modra majolica against unauthorised use and preserves its connection with the town, its traditions and the specific production methods from which the craft originated.

Modra majolica is unique thanks to its centuries-old tradition, handmade production and distinctive artistic style, which developed in the local environment of Modra. Its characteristic designs include floral, vineyard, architectural and figurative motifs. The pottery is shaped on a potter's wheel, glazed and decorated by hand, using traditional skills passed down from one generation to the next.

According to Slovak Folk Majolica, the protected geographical indication is not reserved exclusively for one workshop. Any producer based in Modra can use the designation, provided they follow the approved product specifications and meet the requirements for its use. The recognition therefore protects not only the name but also a traditional craft that has been closely linked to Modra for centuries.

Modra majolica has also been included in Slovakia's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2017.
