Lowering energy prices and strengthening economic competitiveness in Slovakia and other EU member states will require increasing domestic supplies of clean energy, improving energy efficiency and investing strategically in energy grids, storage capacity, flexibility and industrial innovation. At the same time, the European Commission is working closely with Slovakia to help it replace Russian gas without compromising security of supply or driving up prices, European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen told TASR in an interview.
According to Jørgensen, replacing Russian gas is a realistic goal. He noted that since 2022, the interconnection between the Polish and Slovak gas systems had improved significantly, while the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal on the Croatian island of Krk had also been modernised.
“Slovak consumers will benefit from better access to alternative gas sources at competitive prices,” the commissioner said.
The EU is committed to ending imports of Russian energy commodities and fully implementing the ban on Russian gas imports. The bloc aims to phase out Russian gas completely by the end of 2027, with Jørgensen stressing that the process would be coordinated with all member states.
In 2025, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) said Slovakia would never support the European Commission’s REPowerEU plan to phase out Russian gas imports. He argued that the plan would harm Slovak households and the economy while further weakening the EU’s overall competitiveness.
On April 28, 2026, Slovakia confirmed to The Kyiv Independent that it had filed a case with the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg challenging the EU ban on Russian gas imports, which is due to take full effect next autumn. Hungary had already filed a similar case. Slovak Justice Ministry spokesperson Barbora Škulová told The Kyiv Independent that Slovakia had lodged its case on April 24.
The European Commission’s plan envisages ending Russian gas supplies to EU member states from 2028.
