President Peter Pellegrini represented Slovakia at the 81st UN General Assembly in New York this week. In his address, he stressed respect for international law, UN reform and conflict prevention, while also calling for international rules on artificial intelligence, particularly its use in military systems.
At a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine, Pellegrini called for the protection of civilians and critical infrastructure, de-escalation and renewed negotiations. Slovakia also promoted its bid for a non-permanent seat on the Security Council for 2028 and 2029.
Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD) also attended talks on the International Criminal Court, reaffirming Slovakia’s support for its independence and international law. Slovakia additionally presented its culture through the Slovaks in Concert event at New York’s Lincoln Center.
Moreover, Former Foreign Minister and Former Prime Minister Robert Fico’s national security adviser Miroslav Lajčák also attended the UN General Assembly and was seen with the Slovak delegation. His presence drew criticism from the opposition because of his association to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, although the President’s Office claims he was not an official member of the delegation and had only come to greet its members.
