Warhol Museum Reopens After Major Renovation

The renovated Andy Warhol Museum of Modern Art in Medzilaborce officially reopened on Thursday, September 3. Europe’s only museum dedicated specifically to the pop-art icon underwent a major transformation worth 15.9 million euro, including new exhibitions, multimedia installations, an amphitheatre and additional visitor spaces.

President Peter Pellegrini said the museum could become a major attraction for international visitors, noting that Warhol museums can now be visited either in Pittsburgh in the United States or in Medzilaborce.

Prešov regional governor Milan Majerský said completing the project had been difficult due to the pandemic, rising construction costs, higher VAT and the war in neighbouring Ukraine. He stressed, however, that the region did not give up and that its persistence had resulted in the newly transformed museum.

The new exhibition combines original Warhol works with interactive technologies and also features artists including Keith Haring, Roy Lichtenstein, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Banksy.
