Slovakia Plans Tougher Rules on Truancy

Slovakia’s Labour Ministry will submit a package of laws next week aimed at tackling school truancy, offences committed by children, abuse of foster care and misuse of child benefits.

Labour Minister Erik Tomáš (Hlas-SD) said repeated truancy could lead to child benefits being temporarily redirected and later suspended if the situation does not improve. If approved by parliament, the measures would take effect in January 2027. Tomáš said the goal is to ensure that children attend school and have a better chance of improving their future.

Children’s Commissioner Jozef Mikloško supported the measures, stressing that education is a key way out of poverty. At the same time, he said social workers and other support measures remain important and that specific cases should be assessed individually. The package also proposes increasing support for school supplies for children from low-income families from 33 to 50 euros.
