Slovakia’s Environment Ministry plans to remove seven of the eight zones originally proposed for wind energy development, leaving only one area in eastern Slovakia, which will be divided into two zones. Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba (SNS nominee) said wind farms would only be built with the consent of local authorities, which he does not expect in the remaining areas.
The changes will be made as part of the environmental assessment of the government’s plan for accelerating wind energy development. Taraba said approving the document is also important because 35 private wind farm projects had already entered the environmental assessment process before new rules requiring municipalities’ approval came into force. The ministry could use the new document to declare these locations unsuitable for wind farms.
