Following an inspection by Slovakia’s National Security Authority, Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok (Hlas-SD) stressed that two road cameras at the centre of a security controversy were only being tested. He said the devices were not transmitting data and had no access to the Interior Ministry’s systems.
The supplier, Soitron, says it was misled about the cameras' origin. The company's executive director, Ondrej Smolár, said the equipment had been purchased transparently and in good faith.
The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute, which certified the devices, also defended its procedure, saying it had only checked their measurement accuracy, not their origin.
Opposition party Progressive Slovakia (PS) claims the cameras are entirely Russian-made and operate using Russian software. Security expert Peter Bátora says the equipment was allegedly repackaged in Croatia after Russia's invasion of Ukraine so it could be sold on the European market despite sanctions.
