The Danube has reached its lowest flow rate for July since measurements began in 1876. At a press conference, this was stated by Peter Smrtník, a hydrological forecaster from the Slovak Hydrometeorological Office (SHMÚ).
Scientists link the decline mainly to earlier snowmelt in the Alps caused by rising temperatures. Experts from the Slovak Academy of Sciences say that while average annual flows remain stable, they have shown a decreasing trend over the past three decades. The situation is expected to remain critical in the coming days. The development of water levels on the Slovak section of the river will depend mainly on rainfall in the Danube basin in Germany and Austria.
According to Peter Smrtník, more significant precipitation is currently expected around August 7, but forecasts need to be continuously monitored.
