OECD Calls for Continued Reforms

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development says Slovakia should continue reforms in education while taking further steps to strengthen its economy. Its latest report welcomes ongoing changes in preschool education, school curricula and vocational training, but says the country still needs to improve student performance, reduce educational inequalities and strengthen the teaching profession. The OECD forecasts Slovakia's economy will grow by 0.7 percent this year and 1.6 percent in 2027. It also recommends abolishing the financial transaction tax and making some state benefits more targeted.

Finance Minister Ladislav Kamenický said the government appreciates the OECD's recommendations but has no plans to change key social measures, including 13th pensions and parental leave. He added that abolishing the financial transaction tax would create a gap in state revenues that would have to be compensated through other measures.
