President Peter Pellegrini has signed several laws approved by parliament, including changes affecting foreign nationals, road safety and social benefits.
Under the amended foreigners’ residence law, people under temporary protection will be able to apply for temporary residence permits once that status ends. Those who do not apply may remain in Slovakia for up to one year to arrange their return home. The legislation also introduces digital residence permits and creates a new visa-processing authority.
Other approved measures include stricter penalties for excessive speeding, updated social benefits for police officers and soldiers, and amendments to higher education and environmental legislation. A separate law will also allow couples to marry before the president, members of parliament or government ministers.
