Government Defends Prešov Hospital Project

Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) says the construction of the new hospital in Prešov will continue despite technical problems discovered on the site. After visiting the construction area on Tuesday, Fico said the hospital should be completed by August 2027, with trial operations expected in March 2028.

According to the government, a new consortium called Tím Slovensko will take over construction from June 1st. There have been talks about issues found in the concrete columns of the construction, and according to both Fico and Defence Minister Robert Kalinák (both Smer-SD), these are only minor technical difficulties to be repaired or replaced.

Meanwhile, the opposition criticized the government’s handling of the project. Parties such as PS and SaS claim that the hospital will cost over 100 million EUR more than originally planned, while opposition MPs have raised concerns about transparency and legality. SaS’s Tomáš Szalay announced he would file a complaint with the General Prosecutor’s Office.

Despite the criticism, Fico and Kaliňák insist the project will be completed within the current electoral term and say the opposition is trying to politicise the construction.
