Slovakia has condemned recent Russian air attacks on western Ukraine, including strikes near the city of Uzhhorod, just 50 kilometers from the Slovak border. Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD) warned that attacks on civilian areas further reduce the chances for peace negotiations.
Despite the proximity of the strikes, authorities say there is no immediate threat to Slovak residents. The Interior Ministry confirmed that no emergency measures were needed, although monitoring and coordination with security forces have been intensified. Temporary precautions include closing border crossings with Ukraine.
Spokeswoman for the Presidential Ofiice Patrícia Medveď Macíková, confirmed that according to President Peter Pellegrini, the incident highlights the urgent need to update legislation so the Slovak armed forces can respond more effectively to potential airspace violations, even in peacetime.
Opposition MPs criticized the government’s response, calling for stronger action and clearer communication, and warning that the attacks pose a growing security concern.
