Cities Brace for Energy Costs, Fuel Checks Tightened

Slovak cities are preparing for possible increases in fuel and energy prices linked to the conflict in the Middle East, which could raise costs for transport, buildings and municipal services. The Union of Cities of Slovakia said municipalities are closely monitoring the situation and will respond individually based on local conditions.

Many cities already have energy costs included in their budgets or secured through contracts, including joint procurement of electricity and gas running until 2028. Cities that invested in renewable energy, efficiency measures and electromobility are currently in a stronger position to handle price fluctuations.

The situation is also pushing municipalities to better manage energy consumption and look for savings.

Meanwhile, financial authorities have tightened controls to prevent illegal fuel exports. Customs officers are inspecting vehicles, especially at border crossings, and taking samples when needed to protect domestic fuel supplies.
