Slovak filmmakers made a strong impression at the 33rd annual Czech Lion Awards, presented by the Czech Film and Television Academy.
The film Karavan won Best Film, while Slovak director Katarína Gramatová received the Best Director award for Promise, I’ll Be Fine. The film Of Unwanted Tales and People was named Best Animated Film of 2025. All three films were co-produced with STVR.
Slovak Juliana Brutovská won the Czech Lion for Best Supporting Actress. In Karavan, she plays a spontaneous, free-spirited young woman who briefly disrupts the established dynamic between a mother and her son.
Gramatová’s Best Director award came as a surprise. She spent several months researching communities in central Slovakia and invited local residents not only to appear in the film but also to take part in the creative process. In her acceptance speech, she thanked the Academy for supporting young filmmakers.
In the documentary category, Better Go Mad in the Wild by Slovak director Miro Remo also stood out. The film previously won the Crystal Globe at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 2025.
Best Animated Film Of Unwanted Tales and People sensitively helps children understand the grief of losing a loved one.
Slovakia also succeeded in the Best Music category, with Jonatán Pastirčák winning for co-composing the score for Broken Voices. In his speech, he called for the defence of institutional independence.
Overall, the most awards went to the film Franz by Polish director Agnieszka Holland.
