A majority of Slovakia's population considers their country's membership in the European Union to be beneficial. A total of 60 percent of respondents in Slovakia expressed this view shows the latest Eurobarometer survey for the European Parliament. The EU-wide average stands at 62 percent.
The strongest support for EU membership was recorded among people aged 15 to 39. Common concerns among the people include conflicts in their vicinity, energy dependence on third countries, migration and climate change.
More than three quarters of Europeans (76 percent) and as many as 82 percent of Slovakia's population expressed optimism about their personal future and the future of their families. Expectations are less favourable regarding developments in the world, the EU and individual countries. Pessimism about the future of the world was voiced by 42 percent of respondents in Slovakia and 52 percent in the EU. A pessimistic view of the EU's prospects was held by 36 percent of Slovaks and 39 percent of EU citizens. The future of their own country is seen negatively by 42 percent of respondents in Slovakia and 41 percent across the EU.
Among the biggest concerns of Slovakia's population are conflicts near the EU (65 percent; EU average 72 percent) and the Union's dependence on energy supplies from third countries (55 percent; EU average 62 percent). Significant concern is also caused by natural disasters exacerbated by climate change (52 percent; EU average 66 percent) and the operation of drones from non-EU countries on EU territory (52 percent; EU average 60 percent).
In terms of social development, as many as 68 percent of the Slovaks (63 percent in the EU) fear societal polarisation. Disinformation worries 62 percent of respondents in Slovakia, compared with an EU average of 69 percent.
A clear majority of respondents expect the EU to play a more important role in protecting its citizens from global crises and security risks in the future. This view is shared by 71 percent of respondents in Slovakia and 66 percent across the EU. Most also call for a more unified EU approach in crisis situations and a stronger voice on the international stage.
"Geopolitical tensions shape Europeans' everyday sense of security. The people expect the EU to protect them, to be prepared and to act together. That is exactly what a stronger and more self-reliant Europe must deliver. Europe is our strongest shield," said European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.
The Eurobarometer survey was conducted in November 2025 in all 27 EU member states on a sample of 26,453 respondents, including 1,003 in Slovakia.
