Parliament Rejects No-Confidence Vote, Ministerial Motions Delayed

MPs at the Slovak Parliament rejected an opposition-led no-confidence motion against the Slovak government in a vote on Thursday 5 February. Sixty MPs supported the motion, while 79 voted against it, including coalition and several independent MPs backing the government. The opposition argued the cabinet had failed citizens, criticising public finance consolidation measures and what it described as a shift in Slovakia’s foreign policy orientation.

Parliament Speaker Richard Raši accused the opposition of deliberate obstruction rather than substantive debate, warning that prolonged delays are blocking the passage of dozens of bills affecting daily life. The opposition, however, criticised the shortened debate, saying democratic parliamentary rules were not respected.

The debate reconvened on Friday morning to continue final speeches by opposition proposers seeking the dismissal of seven ministers. Only the motion against the entire government has so far reached a vote, which was rejected. No further voting is expected on Friday, with the next parliamentary vote scheduled for Tuesday 10 February.
