Government Approves Plan to Boost Nuclear Education and Skills

The Slovak government has approved an action plan to strengthen education, research, and workforce training in the nuclear sector. The measures will run from 2026 to 2032 and aim to increase the number of graduates in key fields, introduce new university programmes, and support research and development in nuclear technologies.

Education Minister Tomáš Drucker (HLAS-SD) said that the government’s ambition is not to develop these skills solely for Slovakia, saying the country has a unique opportunity to become an education hub for Europe.

According to him the success of the plan depends on sustained investment in education. The government has earmarked three million euros this year for critical secondary-school and university programmes, with a further 25 million euros planned for next year.

Economy Minister Denisa Saková (HLAS-SD) also pointed out that many workers currently operating nuclear power plants are approaching retirement. She noted that this is a Europe-wide trend and warned that countries must prepare well in advance.

Universities are expected to play a key role in improving the situation.

According to Vladimír Kutiš from the Slovak University of Technology, universities are ready to take on the challenge.
