Prime Minister Robert Fico has travelled to the United States, where he will meet U.S. Energy Secretary Christopher A. Wright in Washington and attend the signing of an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in civil nuclear energy. The Slovak delegation includes Economy Minister Denisa Saková (Hlas-SD) and Foreign Affairs Minister Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD), according to the Slovak Government Office.
The agreement establishes a legal and institutional framework for long-term cooperation between Slovakia and the United States in the peaceful and responsible use of nuclear energy, and is seen as a key step toward building a new nuclear power source at Jaslovské Bohunice. The Economy Ministry says the deal aims to deepen strategic cooperation, enable the exchange of know-how and technologies, and strengthen collaboration in education, research and the training of a new generation of nuclear experts.
Minister Saková described nuclear energy as a cornerstone of Slovakia’s energy security, stressing that preparation must begin well in advance, as construction of a new nuclear facility can take 15 to 20 years. She emphasized that the agreement does not represent the selection of a specific technology supplier. A detailed expert analysis will follow to define technical parameters, while the eventual choice of a supplier is to be made transparently and in line with Slovak law and European Union rules.
