Slovakia’s Top Leaders Declare Unity on Key Domestic and Foreign Policy Issues

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini, Speaker of Parliament Richard Raši (Hlas-SD), and Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) declared agreement on fundamental issues concerning Slovakia’s interests at home and abroad. They also confirmed correct mutual relations and their willingness and ability to engage in constructive dialogue on any differing views. This follows from statements by the country’s three highest constitutional officials after a joint Saturday lunch at Bratislava Castle.

“The task of the three highest constitutional officials is to send a signal that cultured politics is possible, that civilized dialogue is possible, and that the three highest constitutional officials must find a way to work together and be able, for the good of the Slovak Republic, to reach common positions and common decisions,” the president said. According to him, the meeting once again confirmed that all three are able to discuss all issues openly, constructively, and pragmatically.

He recalled that all three took the same stance following recent events in Venezuela. He also confirmed agreement that Slovakia should have a representative at talks of the so-called coalition of the willing, while stressing that Slovakia’s position remains unchanged. He emphasized that the country will not continue military support for Ukraine, will not send any soldiers, and will not participate in guarantees for a large loan from the European Commission.

All three stated that the European Union is a vital living space for Slovakia and that the country wants to remain part of it. Prime Minister Fico, however, warned that the EU has never faced such a deep crisis. “I would be very unhappy if, in this crisis that exists in the European Union, Slovakia were running around like a wounded deer and could become a victim of major shifts that may occur in Europe,” he said. He also pointed to the disintegration of the global order and respect for international law, adding that energy security will be another major challenge.

The prime minister therefore considers it important for Slovakia to act sovereignly in Europe and globally. “I want to call on the entire governing coalition, regardless of the fact that we also have internal conflicts and disputes, to come together now and present a bold, courageous, and sovereign state representation that will protect Slovakia in these difficult times,” he said. He is convinced that agreement among the three highest constitutional officials on issues concerning Slovakia’s future will function without any compromises.

“Of course, a law may come where the president says he has a different opinion, and then he will veto it—that’s life, that is the president’s right. Or a coalition partner may tell me they have a different opinion. But on the issue of sovereignty, Slovakia’s position, and the security and survival of our homeland, our country, we must pull together,” the prime minister added, saying the opposition would be welcome to join such an effort if it is willing.

Raši likewise confirmed that the three top officials are able to agree on solutions to serious problems concerning Slovakia, whether in foreign policy or domestic matters. “I do not see any fundamental problems, and in many topics we have shared and similar views,” he noted.

He added that they also discussed the functioning of the Visegrad Group and the Slavkov format. “Our position is clear: we will look for common ground with these countries and try to act jointly in addressing challenges,” he said. The functioning of parliament was also discussed. “I want to confirm that a change to the rules of procedure will be and must be the first item on the agenda of the next parliamentary session,” Raši stated.

On domestic issues, the three officials also discussed economic matters affecting Slovakia in the near future, such as the conclusion of the Recovery and Resilience Plan program. In this context, the president praised the government’s approach to economic growth and increasing the incomes of working people. They also informed one another about their planned foreign trips and activities in 2026, as well as upcoming visits by foreign constitutional officials to Slovakia.
