Slovakia’s ruling party Smer-SD is open to post-election cooperation with several political forces, including the extra-parliamentary party Republika, stated Deputy Speaker of Parliament Tibor Gašpar.
According to Gašpar, Republika is a legitimate political subject with which dialogue is necessary, adding that Smer-SD intends to negotiate with parties whose values at least partly overlap with its own. He also said the party remains open to cooperation with KDH, arguing that Christian Democrats could achieve more of their programme alongside Smer-SD than with liberal opposition parties.
Gašpar stressed that forming any future governing coalition would require compromises and expressed hope that Hlas-SD and nationalist forces such as SNS would recover politically ahead of the next elections. Meanwhile, Hlas-SD has firmly ruled out running on a joint candidate list with its current coalition partners.
Speaker of Parliament and Hlas-SD Deputy Chair Richard Raši said the party holds different positions on many value-based issues, including its clear pro-European stance. He described Hlas-SD as a “calm and rational force” and excluded cooperation with the Slovensko movement.
