Twenty-nine people, including children, who lost their homes in last week’s fatal fire in the Mašličkovo area of Košice’s Luník IX borough, are currently staying in a local authority building, borough mayor Marcel Šaňa told TASR. They are receiving emergency accommodation, food, clothing, and support from non-profit and charitable organisations.
Šaňa said the borough is looking for temporary housing until new flats can be allocated. Non-residential premises in one residential block have been identified for conversion, with work to be funded through a public collection organised by ETP Slovakia in cooperation with the borough.
All existing flats in Luník IX are currently occupied. The borough has applied for EU funding to build four residential buildings with 48 new flats. These units will be reserved for current Luník IX residents who meet criteria such as regular rent payments, maintenance, and employment. Their relocation would free up existing units for families from the illegal Mašličkovo settlement, where around 300 people live.
The 10 November fire, which began in a shack, killed two children and spread to several other dwellings. As a preventive step, the borough plans to provide safety training and supply wood for heating.
