The Slovak Mountaineering Association (SHS) James has rejected contract proposals prepared by the Slovak Tourist Club (KST) for the management of high-mountain cabins in the Tatras. The decision, made during an extraordinary assembly, deepens the long-running dispute over who should run Slovakia’s most iconic mountain shelters. SHS James argues that the contracts failed to protect key terms of the lease. The group will now seek revisions that safeguard its ownership rights. The biggest disagreement concerns Téry’s Hut, where the mountaineers want to replace the selected manager Tomáš Hvizdák with Peter Michalka. Some agreements were approved, including for Zelené pleso, Zbojnícka Chata, and Chata pod Rysmi, which legendary caretaker Viktor Beránek is expected to continue running. The controversy follows a widely criticized selection process in August, which many saw as unfair. For now, the future of several Tatras cabins remains uncertain — until climbers and tourists reach common ground.
