Slovakia Looks Beyond Europe as Export Pressures Grow

Nearly 90 percent of Slovakia’s economy depends on exports, which means any geopolitical tension or trade dispute in the EU can quickly impact national performance. Economy Minister Denisa Saková said this on Thursday at the EU Export Day in Bratislava, an event focused on helping Slovak companies strengthen their competitiveness outside the EU.

Saková noted that the European Union is seeking new export markets, especially after new tariffs affected Slovak products in the United States. She also warned that high energy prices in Europe are undermining competitiveness, calling for prices comparable to those in China or the United States.

Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár added that 78 percent of Slovakia’s exports go to EU countries, but the government wants to expand ties with regions such as the Indo-Pacific, Brazil, China, India, and Indonesia.

EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič said Brussels is taking steps to secure critical raw materials and stabilize Europe’s steel sector — including new import quotas and 50-percent tariffs on steel exceeding 18.3 million tons. He said the goal is to make Europe’s steel production profitable again and ensure the economic security of key industries like defense and engineering.
