Prime Minister Fico to Meet Ukrainian President Zelenskyy

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) is set to hold a high-level meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Uzhhorod today, focusing on energy infrastructure and bilateral relations. Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko and European Council President António Costa will also attend, providing an opportunity for informal discussions.

The Slovak delegation will include Economy Minister Denisa Saková (Hlas-SD) and Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD).

Speaking in Parliament, Blanár said he expects a “constructive dialogue” and stressed the importance of good relations with Ukraine while ensuring Slovakia’s national interests are respected.

Interior Minister and Hlas-SD leader Matúš Šutaj Eštok highlighted the need to protect critical infrastructure, such as the Druzhba oil pipeline.

Opposition figures have questioned the timing of the meeting.

Ivan Korčok of Progressive Slovakia welcomed the talks but criticised Prime Minister Fico for meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in China just days earlier. He accused Fico of going to Beijing to seek notes from the Russian president, suggesting that Ukraine will be closely evaluating Slovakia’s recent diplomatic signals.

The agenda of Friday’s talks will be refined in advance, with energy infrastructure expected to be a key topic. The meeting follows Fico’s recent diplomatic tour, which included meetings with leaders from China, Russia, Serbia, and Vietnam. A joint press conference with Fico and Zelenskyy will follow to announce the conclusions of their discussions.
