Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) on Tuesday welcomed the latest diplomatic efforts to resolve the war in Ukraine, following talks in Washington between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump.
After a video call with EU leaders, Fico reiterated two conditions he considers essential for peace: Ukraine should not join NATO, and territorial changes must be part of negotiations. He stressed that he has held this position since the beginning of the conflict.
Slovak President Peter Pellegrini, too, welcomes the efforts of the international community to achieve lasting and sustainable peace in Ukraine. According to him, the only path to peace is to continue negotiations.
Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD) views the continuation of peace talks very positively. He added that Washington’s strong interest in guaranteeing peace in Ukraine is a clear sign of the US administration’s determination to end the war as soon as possible.
The Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) also welcomed the continuation of peace talks, noting with satisfaction that Ukraine remains a central partner. The party praised the constructive tone of the Trump- Zelenskyy meeting and highlighted the value of renewed European involvement
Interior Minister and Voice–SD leader Matúš Šutaj Eštok described the talks as the “greatest opportunity for peace since the war began,” expressing optimism about recent high-level contacts.
Trump met Zelenskyy on 18 August, three days after talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. A three-way summit between Trump, Putin, and Zelenskyy is still under consideration.
