Slovakia’s new consolidation package will focus on cutting expenditures, with every ministry required to reduce spending by a substantial amount, Finance Minister Ladislav Kamenický (Smer-SD) said after Thursday’s coalition council meeting.
According to Kamenický, both he and Prime Minister Robert Fico pushed for significant measures on the expenditure side. He declined to reveal exact figures, noting that details will be agreed within the coalition council.
Meanwhile, Progressive Slovakia MPs Michal Šimečka and Štefan Kišš argue that alongside proposals for additional consolidation measures, the government should also introduce a pro-growth package to revive Slovakia’s economy, prioritizing cuts within government spending rather than on the public. Kišš urged the government to present its proposals promptly, rather than leaving citizens in suspense until the last minute.
The government aims to have Parliament approve the draft state budget at its October session, with November 21 as the latest possible deadline.
