Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala has publicly urged Slovakia to back the EU’s 18th sanctions package against Russia. In a letter shared on social media platform X on Saturday, Fiala called on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) to uphold European unity and warned that Slovakia’s current stance could isolate it from allies.
Fiala emphasised the need to defend shared values such as freedom, security, and solidarity, recalling both countries’ painful history with Kremlin-led occupations.
Czechia now joins Lithuania and Germany in criticising Slovakia’s veto threat.
