An emergency remains in effect in 34 municipalities following the recent windstorm. "Everyone knows what to do," said Michal Kaliňák, State Secretary of the Interior Ministry, who believes that the aid system has now stabilized.
"The government is helping, and our decisions have worked," he added, noting that the deadline for reimbursement of costs related to the adverse weather has been extended to July 23.
Labor Minister Erik Tomáš previously reported that 138 households have requested assistance so far. Forty applications have been approved and are being paid out, while others will be assessed today and in the coming days.
Neither Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok nor Prime Minister Robert Fico were present at the press conference held in the affected town of Gelnica. The opposition has criticized the government for failing to visit the areas where people most need help.
