Twenty-seven scientists from nine European countries have urged Slovak Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba to stop the planned culling of 350 brown bears. They warn that such a large-scale intervention could severely impact the species’ genetic diversity and long-term survival.
Citing recent genetic studies, the experts estimate Slovakia's bear population at around 1,000—far fewer than official hunting figures. They argue that broad culling is ineffective, urging instead targeted actions against individual problem bears, improved waste management, and public education.
Despite these concerns, Minister Taraba dismissed the appeal, claiming the bear population poses a threat and suggesting critics focus on their own countries.
