Green Thursday is the Thursday before Easter, during which people traditionally consume green dishes. One of the most popular foods on this day is spinach, which is not only tasty but also a very healthy choice, as highlighted by the Regional Public Health Authority (RÚVZ) of Bratislava.
According to the authority, spinach has a high water content, around 92 percent, and is rich in vitamins such as vitamin A, C, K, and folic acid. It also contains minerals like magnesium and potassium. "Spinach also provides a lot of fiber, which helps support digestion and is important for maintaining regular bowel movements and preventing constipation," added Natália Šranková from the RÚVZ health advice office.
Furthermore, spinach is high in phytochemicals which, according to experts, can positively affect human health. "Spinach is a rich source of carotenoids, such as lutein and zeaxanthin, which are important for eye health. It is also abundant in flavonoids like kaempferol and quercetin, which have significant antioxidant effects," explained RÚVZ.
The authority noted that while the traditional preparation of spinach is a spinach stew, there are many other ways to prepare it deliciously. "It is excellent on its own as part of fresh salads, but it also makes a great side dish for both cooked meats and vegetable dishes. It is also a great addition to smoothies, or can be used to make a delicious spinach soup," the RÚVZ concluded.
