New measures have been implemented at Slovakia’s borders to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. In cooperation with veterinarians, the police are ensuring compliance, according to Roman Hájek, spokesperson for the Police Corps Presidium.
"All vehicles entering Slovakia through former border crossings from Bratislava to Slovenské Ďarmoty – Balassagyarmat (inclusive) must pass through disinfection barriers or gates. For the section from Slovenské Ďarmoty – Balassagyarmat to Slovenské Nové Mesto – Sátoraljaújhely (I/79), this requirement applies only to vehicles over 3.5 tons. Entry of animals susceptible to FMD is permitted only through the Šahy – Parassapuszta border crossing, while their import is banned at all other crossings," he stated.
Hájek also noted that, until further notice, an exemption applies to cargo vehicles transporting carcasses of animals culled due to the disease. The exemption also covers vehicles providing maintenance services or transporting disinfectants. The police urge drivers to comply with these measures.
