Well, speaking about our international audience as well as radio vs digital media, Radio Slovakia International has also been engaging with our listeners by posting a question of the week on our Facebook and Instagram profiles. This week’s inquiry pays tribute to the late investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée, Martina Kušnírová, who were murdered in 2018. The investigation carried out in the wake of their murders proved that the crime was committed in relation to Kuciak’s investigative work. As such, we felt it appropriate to ask our listeners and followers: Who is a top journalist in your country and why is he/she well known professionally?
Our follower Rasheed Naz brought Pakistani journalist, columnist, and writer Hamid Mir to our attention. Rasheed explained: Mir initially worked as a journalist with Pakistani newspapers. He has hosted the political talk show Capital Talk on Geo News intermittently since 2002. He writes columns for Urdu as well as English newspapers, both national and international. He has been a contributor to the Global Opinions section of The Washington Post since June 2021. He is known for his stance against the dominance of the Establishment in Pakistan. Having survived two assassination attempts, Mir has been banned from television three times, and has lost his job twice due to his stand for press freedom and human rights.
Thank you, Rasheed, for sharing this information with us—we truly appreciate the chance to learn more about Hamid Mir and support journalism around the world.
The RSI English section also received two names from Slovakia—the private TV Markíza investigative journalist Kristína Kovešová, and the current Editor-in-Chief of daily SME, Beata Balogová, the laureate of 2020 European Press Prize. Thank you to our follower Steven Gouws for highlighting Balogová’s “brilliant opinion pieces” and commendable work as the former editor-in-chief of Slovakia’s English-language weekly newspaper, the Slovak Spectator.
Join Martina Greňová Šimkovičová as she sat down with Beata Balogová for a conversation about her work in the world of Slovak investigative journalism and her perspective on the current state of the media in Slovakia.
