NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte will visit Slovakia on Thursday (February 20) to discuss defence spending with Slovak President Peter Pellegrini and Premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD), Pellegrini stated at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday.
Allies in the North Atlantic Alliance agreed in 2014 to allocate 2 percent of their GDP annually for defence. However, the new American President, Donald Trump, is now urging member states to contribute up to 5 percent of their GDP.
In an interview with Politico magazine Rutte said that NATO-Member states will need to increase defence spending significantly. He stated that the final amount would be discussed at the NATO summit in The Hague this June.
