The Police at Saturday’s municipal elections will be focusing on potential vote-buying. “We will review each received complaint or criminal charges on suspicion of crime or offense,” said the spokeswoman for the Police Corps Denisa Baloghova.
The Police warn people that whoever by force or threat of force or deceit hinders someone to use his/her constitutional right to elect a candidate of choice in the elections, commits the offense of obstructing the preparation and conduct of elections. “For doing so, even in case it involves forcing a citizen to vote for some candidate in the elections, shall be punished by imprisonment of six months to three years,” adds Baloghova. Police announced it would take security precautions during the municipal elections. There will be patrols around buildings where polling stations are located, district, local and municipal election commissions, and also the Central Election Commission. Police also calls on the people to report any potential disruptions of elections immediately the nearest police station.
Election of mayors of towns and villages and members of municipal and local councils across Slovakia for the next four years will take place on Saturday, 15 November. There are 4.4 million eligible voters in Slovakia aged 18 and older. Also eligible to vote are foreigners with permanent residence in Slovakia. According to the Interior Ministry, there are about 61,500 of them.
