The heads of state and government of the European Union member states have failed at the first attempt to find an agreement on who should occupy the EU's top posts for the next five years after the European elections. They postponed the decision until next week's summit. The meeting of the Brussels club leaders was the first since the vote for the European Parliament and the first time Slovakia was represented by Peter Pellegrini as president. After the summit, he also declared his support for Mark Rutte for the post of NATO chief.
Pellegrini’s priority, which he coordinated with Prime Minister Fico, was to assert the best possible position for Slovak European Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič during the negotiations. According to him, he is one of the most experienced and longest-serving members of the EU executive.
In his words, Peter Pellegrini can imagine supporting former Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa as the head of the Council on one condition. "That he, as a member of the European Social Democrats faction, reconsiders his attitude towards Smer-SD and Hlas-SD and decides on the readmission of MEPs from these parties to the faction," stated the Slovak President.
