Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár confirmed on Monday that Slovakia contributed 2.6 million EUR as a donor to the eighth annual Brussels conference on "Supporting the future of Syria and the region". The EU collected a total of 2.12 billion EUR. The conference re-emphasized the need for a political solution to the crisis in Syria in accordance with a UN Security Council resolution and also the need to mobilize financial support to address the most urgent needs of civilians.
“In Slovak Republic we find the crisis to be a problem of solving illegal migration and migration as such. If people are running away from a war conflict, then they need to be helped. And our philosophy is that they need to be helped where they live,” says Blanár.
Blanár also confirmed that he is going to represent Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico at the June peace conference on Ukraine in Geneva. As he stated, the Russian Federation had indicated that it would take any conclusion of the conference as an ultimatum.
“However, I am also somewhat positive, because there is information that the next peace conference should continue in Saudi Arabia, where the Russian Federation could already be invited,” stated Blanár. The Slovak Foreign Minister added, he finds this information crucial for the further development of the conflict in Ukraine.
