Elections to the post of mayor won't have two rounds, and MPs will continue to be able to receive extra salaries as mayors and regional governors following a decision by the Smer-dominated Parliament to reject a number of legislative proposals drafted by the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) on Thursday.
The proposals were rejected during an extraordinary parliamentary session initiated by the Opposition that was called to discuss several Opposition bills discarded from the parliamentary agenda by the governing Smer-SD party two weeks ago. KDH was pushing for a single mandate principle for lawmakers to prevent them from simultaneously drawing salaries as mayors and governors. Also on the table was an amendment designed to ban legislators from practising law at the same time and a proposal to introduce two-round elections for mayors. Smer removed ten Opposition motions from the agenda of the House two weeks ago, claiming that they form part of the Opposition's campaign in the run-up to the municipal elections slated for 15 November. Parliament on Wednesday finally gave its consent to the aforementioned special session to deal with the proposals.
